SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — A few years ago I was introduced to The Folio Society's collection of illustrated books. I was instantly hooked to the point that when I published my first book I took in a stack of Folio Society books as examples of what I wanted the hardcover to look like. I think we almost got there (on a pauper's budget, no less). Here's a look at some of this season's newest titles and a few old favorites (the Marvel anthologies are the most gorgeous books in the world). You'll also find Folio Society releases in my recent guides for Black Panther and Halloween Horror.

For Your Eyes Only by Ian Fleming & Illustrated by Fay Dalton
Readers might be familiar with the titles of the stories contained within For Your Eyes Only, but the adventures they depict might surprise them. As well as the expected – and eagerly anticipated – danger, thrills and action that Bond is so well known for, these five stories peel back the layers of Fleming’s complex hero, revealing, as crime writer Ian Rankin de-scribes it, ‘a James Bond few of us have had the good fortune to meet’. Series artist Fay Dalton returns to provide her own irresistible spin on MI6’s greatest, with seven full-colour illustrations and an especially dramatic slipcase. The smart binding design calls to mind Bond’s impeccably tailored suits, making this another unmissable entry in the ever-popular Folio Bond collection.

Jaws by Peter Benchley & Illustrated by Hokyoung Kim
One of the greatest cult thrillers of all time, Jaws has sold in excess of 20 million copies worldwide. Seething with sexual tension, political corruption and macabre affairs, the novel is deeper and darker than Steven Spielberg's seminal 1975 film, while the magnificent shark scenes are some of the most terrifying prose sequences in modern fiction. If ever a novel was begging to be illustrated, this is it.
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel & Illustrated by Igor & Marina
England in the 1520s. Henry VIII is King; Cardinal Wolsey is his chief advisor and Thomas Cromwell is Wolsey’s right-hand man. But in Tudor England allegiances are tenuous and the King’s favour can change in a heartbeat. So, when Wolsey fails to secure Rome’s support for Henry’s longed-for divorce, his assets are seized, and his reputation ruined. Cromwell is well placed to step up to the King’s side, but can he exert any influence over the volatile monarch?
The Postman Always Rings Twice byJames M. Cain &Illustrated by Patrick Leger
James M. Cain was sitting on a park bench by the White House in 1914 when a voice inside him said, ’You’re going to be a writer.’ It was 20 years before his prediction came true but his varied career as a singer, crime reporter and insurance man proved vital to his notorious first novel, The Postman Always Rings Twice. Based on a real-life murder, the shocking story was an instant bestseller that inspired both fascination and outrage, and was banned in Boston for its plain-speaking portrayal of adultery and homicide.
Blood Meridian byCormac McCarthy &Illustrated by Gérard DuBois
Brutal and bleak; unique and compelling, Blood Meridian is widely regarded as Cormac McCarthy’s magnum opus, and one of the greatest American novels of all time. An epic western, it explores the spiralling violence suffered by Americans and Indians along the Texas-Mexican border in the mid-19th century. The disregard for life and law on both sides is a reflection on humanity’s destiny, and who among us might control its fate.
The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick & Illustrated by Shan Jiang
Considered Philip K. Dick’s greatest novel when first published in 1962, this mind-bending work redefined the sci-fi genre. In it Dick conjured a new vision of our world – a twisted simulacrum of modern history in which the Axis Powers have won the Second World War. America is now divided: the eastern United States is a puppet of the German Reich – a regime of madness and brutality – while the western Pacific seaboard is governed by a militaristic, yet spiritual, Japanese dictatorship. Amongst the complexities of this new existence, a group of seemingly unremarkable people play out their everyday lives. As their narratives intersect, Dick poses larger metaphysical questions concerning the authentication of history, perception and the building blocks of destiny.
Selected Short Stories by Philip K. Dick
This special collection of short stories has been curated to celebrate the incredible scope of Philip K. Dick’s imagination and wit. Twenty-four artists were commissioned to create the spectacular illustrations, while the volume itself is full of quirky details: the vibrant sprayed page edges feature a pair of startling eyes, and the unique die-cut slipcase features a hidden image on the interior bursting with colour. Award-winning novelist and Philip K. Dick fan Jonathan Lethem has provided a fascinating introduction, while the edition also includes an insightful preface by the author himself. Selected Short Stories brings together the very best in modern book design with a host of diverse artists, all to explore the fantastic – and the fantastically strange – universe of Philip K. Dick.
