Boise State's Webb III ready for shot at the pros

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) — James Webb III probably stands out on Boise State's campus.

There aren't many 6-foot-9 students.

But like nearly every other student, Webb III is packing up.

Only instead of going home for the summer, Webb III is hoping to land a spot in the NBA.

"Just getting everything situated," Webb III said. "Taking care of my apartment. My car."

The redshirt junior left Boise State early to pursue a pro basketball career.

In the meantime, a high school gym will have to do.

"Right now I am working out at Borah High School, just because of graduation," said Webb III, since Boise State held its graduation on Saturday inside Taco Bell Arena.

Webb III averaged 15.8 points and 9.13 rebounds per game last season for the Broncos.

He said his favorite memories at Boise State were winning a share of the Mountain West Conference regular-season title in 2015, and also beating No. 24 Oregon, 74-72 at home in December.

But there's also one other thing.

"The practices," Webb III said. "You look back at those, and at the time may have not liked them but you look back and enjoy every moment of that."

Webb III is an alternate for the NBA Combine, and various draft projections have him either being selected in the second round, or not at all.

But that's fueling him.

"The negative comments and things that people say," he said. "If that's all I have to deal with right now that is fine with me."

The NBA Draft is June 23. Webb III has no clue where he will be that day or where he will end up.

"I don't know. That's a long ways away. I haven't really thought about that," he said.

If Webb III isn't drafted, he could always be given a tryout, sign as a free agent or play overseas.

Boise State has had six players selected in the NBA Draft. The last was Roberto Bergersen in 1999. The Broncos have also had three players play in the NBA. The last was Coby Karl in 2010 for Golden State and Denver.
